Crusader Sports Highlights for Week Ending September 9

Chiefs topple Crusaders

Caldwell came on strong in the fourth quarter to rally to a 51-44 victory over Morris Catholic in a Northern Hills Conference - Suburban Division varsity boys basketball game played Thursday in West Caldwell. The win was the fourth for the Chiefs in six outings while the Crusaders dropped to 3-4.
Matt Clifford ignited the fourth quarter run of 26-16 that surged the Chiefs to victory when he netted eight of his game high 18 points. Jim Edwards chipped in with 10 points while his brother Tom converted eight free throws and Kyle Stavella dropped foul shots through the twine. Caldwell built up a 21-14 advantage in free throws. John Harner and Chris Holloway added four points apiece.
In the girls division of the Northern Hills Conference indoor track & field championships contested at the Simon Center on the campus of Drew University in Madison on Saturday Julianne Sundberg glided over the 55 meter hurdles in 10.07 seconds to pick up the bronze medal with a third place finish. Her teammate Kristin Lewis cleared the bar 4'6" to finish fifth in the high jump.
Daniel Barone placed fifth in the boys' division high jump when he cleared 5'6" and Jimmy Josko raced to a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash, turning in a clocking of 53.95 seconds.
In wrestling, Caldwell dropped a 39-24 non-conference match to Parsippany Hills on Wednesday. Marty Crown decked Mike Rubenstein 1 minute, 39 seconds into the 189 pound bout and Lee Sanchez picked up another forfeit at 215 pounds. Joe Stefanelli closed out the competition with a 10-4 decision over Ryan Tower at heavyweight. In the lower weights, Steve Martell posted an 11-6 decision over Justim Altschul at 119 pounds, Rob Bergen came away with a 10-3 decision over Dan Aguanno at 130 and Chris Stefanelli scored a 7-5 decision over Mike Seminaris at 145 pounds.
Lauren Rooney netted 11 points but the Lady Chiefs fell to Morris Catholic 68-23 in an NHC girls hoops contest. Aimee Ripoll finished with seven points as the Chiefs fell behind 15-7 in the opening quarter.
