Millers splash to NHC title

Helwig sisters splash Dodgers to NHC title

Tom Gonnella and Bart Mebel splashed to a pair of meet records apiece to ignite Millburn to a first place finish in the team standings at the Northern Hills Conference Girls Swimming Championships contested at William Paterson on January 11, 2001. Millburn accumulated 355.5 points while runnerup West Orange finished with 261.5 points and Caldwell placed third with a point total of 194. Gonnella established new meet records in the 200 yard individual medley (2:02.1) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:02.27). while Mebel set new meet marks in the 50 yard freestyle (23.11) and 100 yard freestyle (50.02). Other new meet records were set by Delbarton's Matt Goracy in the 200 yard freestyle (1:52.96) and West Orange's duo of Robby Willhoit in the 100 yard backstroke (58.42) and Fabian Villota in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.47). In the relay competitions, the Millers foursome of Jon Feder, Gonnella, Mebel and Brian Goodwin swam to new meet marks in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:34.95) and 400 yard freestyle relay (3:29.19). West Orange's quartet of Robby Willhoit, Villota, Eric Hammer and Kevin Willhoit opened the championship meet posting a new standard of 1:47.34 in the 200 yard medley relay.

Becky and Laura Helwig both splashed to a pair of first place finishes and swam legs on two victorious relay quarters to lead Madison to a first place finish in the team standings at the Northern Hills Conference Girls Swimming Championships contested at William Paterson on January 9, 2001. Madison accumulated 269 points while runnerup Pequannock finished with 197 points and Montville placed third with a point total of 183. Becky Helwig stole the individual spotlight as she established new meet records in the 50 yard freestyle (25.68) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:01.08). Her sister Liz set a new meet mark in the 200 yard individual medley (2:13.69) and was fastest to the finish wall in the 100 yard freestyle. Other new meet records were set by Madison's Julie Latona in the 100 yard breatstroke (1:11.45), West Orange's Laura Fabiano in the 500 yard freestyle (5:16.59) and Pequannock's Erin Vanderberg in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.18). The Dodgers concluded the competition by setting a new mark of 3:56.59 in the 400 yard freestyle relay with the foursome of the Helwig sisters, Lindsay Boos and Amanda Gilbert.
