West Milford Highlanders Sports Highlights for week ending June 2, 2002 West Milford swept the triple crown of scholastic softball on Thursday when the Lady Highlanders defeated Bayonne 7-1 in the championship game of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group IV post-season tournament. The triumph advanced West Milford into the semifinals of the NJSIAA Group IV tournament. They play Montclair, the Section 2 champion, on Tuesday. Earlier in the season, the Lady Highlanders won the Passaic County crown and placed first in the Skyline Division standings of the Northern Hills Conference. Michelle Bark went the route in picking her 19th win against four setbacks while the Lady Highlanders improved to a 25-5. Bark scattered three singles and blanked the Hudson County squad until the top of the seventh as the junior fanned four and allowed only two walks. Sophomore Danielle Masters powered the attack, legging out a pair of two-baggers as she knocked in four runs. Dana Pordon also doubled as the West Milford batting order recorded 11 hits. The Lady Highlanders moved out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and expanded their advantage to 5-0 by the end of the third inning before icing the decision with two more runs in the sixth. Top-seeded West Milford reached the title game by defeating Kearny 3-1 in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday afternoon in West Milford. Trailing 1-0, the Lady Highlanders rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth that was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Danielle Fraser. Holly Van Dyke singled in the other run. Bark pitched a completed game, allowing only two hits while striking out seven.

Giannattasio bowls 297 in NHC competition Frosh Kochajki takes all-around gold in Passaic County Championships .. West Milford's Todd Giannattasio lit up the Northern Hills Conference bowling league when he recorded a 297. The senior Highlanders left the 3-4-10 on his last ball as he posted a new personal high. Averaging 181 this season, Giannattasio's previous high game this season was a 255 and his best three-game series in 607 West Milford frosh Jenna Kochakji turned in a gold medal performance at the 2001 Passaic County Gymnastics Championships. Kochajki recovered from two falls twice on the vault to win the all-around title with a total of 34.9 points. She was runnerup on the uneven bars with a score of 9.05 and finished second on the balance beam with a total of 8.85 points before claiming the gold medal in the floor exercise with a score of 9.25.
